TVTP IDAHOT 2014 Reports

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) 2014

On May 17th, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia is held annually in many countries around the world. IDAHOT was created in 2004 to draw the attention of policy makers, opinion leaders, social movements, the media, and the public in general to these issues, and to promote a world of tolerance, respect and freedom regardless of people’s sexual orientations or gender identities.

The Transgender Violence Tracking Portal has received 102 reports of transgender anti-violence from January 1st, 2014 to April 30th, 2014 since the opening of the portal in April 2014.

Over 100 countries hold IDAHOT Events to raise awareness of the continued violence and oppression against all who identify as LGBTQQI.

Given the recent development and implementation of the TVTP system, the information available is based on previous reports generated by other tracking vehicles, what has been discovered by the portal or submitted by volunteer reporters and researchers to date.  Data is verified based on news media and published information as well as substantiated  individual reporting.  The project will also be reaching out to police departments worldwide to get current case standings.

Tragically, the level of youth being murdered in the four months of 2014 has been astounding.

  • 8 year old boy beaten to death by father for being trans*
  • 14 year old strangled to death and stuffed under a bed
  • Two 16 year olds were shot to death
  • Three 18 year olds stabbed to death, dismembered, or shot
  • Two 18 year olds murdered with no details being reported
  • An 18 year old suffered two violent attacks by a mob and survived.

In total, almost 10% of all reported violence was suffered by transgender youth.

Of the 102 murders, 36 persons were shot multiple times, 14 stabbed multiple times, 11 were beaten to death, 3 were burned to death, 3 dismembered/mutilated, and 2 were tortured, 2 were strangled, 1 was hanged, 1 had her throat cut and 1 was stoned to death.

We currently have 14 countries have had media reports or reported incidents to the TVTP project.

The TVTP recognizes that there are significant amounts of anti-transgender violence that never make it to the press, or are reported.

It is important to remember that the numbers above are only a small fraction of what is occurring internationally to the transgender community.

There are numerous countries that have not reported in yet, and the numbers over the next several months are expected to dramatically increase as awareness spreads and reporting capability is now made available through the portal.
